Steam page teardown: Online: 404 — 7 fixes to gain wishlists

This page scores 92 out of 100 and passes almost every mechanical check we run. It is still selling the wrong game. The survival tool here is a smartphone with a working in-game internet, and the short description calls it a gadget.

What we read

92

out of 100, read by the Steam Page Analyzer on 6 September 2026

Description

20 / 20

2299 characters, 212 unique keywords. The hook is in there, in the second section.

Screenshots

15 / 15

10 screenshots, a perfect count. Count is not sequencing.

Tags

8 / 10

20 tags. The first five are Survival, Co-op, Base Building, Zombies, Action.

Pre-launch proof

4 / 10

No demo, and no reviews yet because the game is unreleased.

Three readings

Best existing asset

Screenshot 2. A cabin with car doors bolted to the walls, 2 players at a fire, a solar panel on the roof. It reads at thumbnail size.

Main conversion leak

The short description never says the word phone. It promises “your most important gadget” and leaves the buyer to guess.

Fastest win

Name the phone in the short description and move screenshot 2 into first place. Both are edits, not new assets.

Positioning

A high score is not the same as a clear page

A checklist can only measure what is present. This page has 10 screenshots, a featured gameplay video, 21 languages, both requirement columns, a committed date and 20 tags. On count alone it is one of the most complete pre-launch pages we have read.

Completeness is not the problem. A stranger who lands here learns that it is an open-world survival game with co-op and zombies. Steam already has hundreds of those. It does not learn the one thing that makes this page worth stopping on.

The hook

The best idea on the page is in the second section

Scroll past the short description and the long description opens strongly. It asks whether a real person would smelt ore in a homemade furnace. Then it answers itself in a heading: your smartphone is your best friend and your worst enemy.

Your phone is the survival manual. There is no crafting book, so you look things up on an in-game internet that also carries a map, a flashlight, adverts and unreliable advice. That is a genuinely new answer to a very crowded genre.

It sits roughly 400 characters below the fold of the description, under a video and 10 screenshots. Most visitors never reach it.

Copy

The short description withholds the one detail that sells

The current version runs 287 characters and reads: an open-world survival simulator where even seasoned veterans of the genre will have to rethink their typical survival approach. It closes on “just don’t forget your most important gadget”.

Every clause is about a category, and the one concrete noun is withheld on purpose. A tease works on a follower who is already invested. It does not work on a stranger scrolling a Next Fest grid with no reason to care yet.

Suggested short description

You have no crafting book, only your phone. Look up how to survive on an in-game internet full of adverts and bad advice. Strip a quarantined district for parts and bolt a car door to your shelter wall. Alone or with 3 friends.

That version names the mechanic in 8 words and keeps the district, the co-op and the scavenging. It also gives Steam search the phrase “in-game internet” next to the word survive.

Screenshots

Ten shots, a perfect score, and the wrong one first

Our own analyzer gives this set 15 out of 15, because 10 shots is the ideal count. That score is measuring quantity. The carousel is the silent version of the pitch, and order decides whether it lands.

Shot 1 is a dark interior. A hostile figure crouches by boxes and there is a small device in your hand, which is the phone, and at thumbnail size it is a smudge of light. Shot 2 is daylight: a cabin with car doors bolted to its walls, 2 players at a fire, a solar panel on the roof.

Shot 2 proves co-op, base building and improvised scavenging in one readable frame. Shots 3 and 5 are a duck and a deer beside water, both lovely, both landscape photography. Two of the five slots that matter most are spent on wildlife.

Reorder so the first three prove three different things: the fortified cabin, the phone mid-lookup with adverts on screen, then the quarantined district at night.

Tags

Twenty tags, and the biggest shelf is missing

The first five are Survival, Co-op, Base Building, Zombies and Action. That is a defensible opening, and Base Building is doing real work. Steam weights early tags most, so this part is close to right.

The gap is “Open World Survival Craft”. It is the tag people who buy Rust, Valheim and Sons of the Forest browse by name, and it is not in the 20. Adding it costs nothing and changes which queues this page appears in.

The tail is the other problem. Party Game, Nature, Hidden Object and FPS sit next to Survival Horror. Party Game and Survival Horror promise opposite evenings, and a buyer reads that as a page that has not decided.

Store setup

The genre field says Massively Multiplayer

Steam files this page under Action, Adventure, Indie, Massively Multiplayer and Simulation. The description offers 4 playable characters and a story you take on alone or with friends. Nothing here is an MMO.

That field decides which browse pages carry the game and which expectations a reviewer arrives with. Someone who buys expecting persistent servers writes a bad review about a good game. This is one checkbox in Steamworks and it should come out.

Proof

No demo, 40 days out

Pre-launch proof scores 4 out of 10, the lowest reading on the page. There is no playable demo and no reviews, because the game is not out. Every other weak point here is an edit; this one is work.

It is also the fix with the most upside. A phone you use to look things up on a fake internet is a mechanic people will not believe from a screenshot. Twenty minutes of playable build sells it in a way no description can.

Punch list

Seven fixes, ranked by impact

Ranked by impact

  1. 01

Say the word phone in the short description.

    Highest impact

The current 287 characters end on “just don’t forget your most important gadget”. That is a tease, and a tease only works on someone already following the game. Search traffic and Next Fest traffic have 4 seconds and no context. The phone with a working in-game internet is the reason this page is not another survival game, so it belongs in the first line.

  2. 02

Lead the screenshots with the fortified cabin.

    Highest impact

Screenshot 1 is a dark interior with a hostile figure and a device in your hand that is unreadable at thumbnail size. Screenshot 2 is the cabin with car doors bolted to its walls, 2 players, a campfire, a solar panel. Shot 2 proves co-op, base building and scavenging in one bright frame. Swap them.

  3. 03

Put “Open World Survival Craft” in the first five tags.

    High impact

All 20 tags are set and the biggest shelf in this genre is not among them. “Open World Survival Craft” is the tag buyers of Rust, Valheim and Sons of the Forest actually browse. The page currently opens on Survival, Co-op, Base Building, Zombies, Action. Three of those five describe the shelf rather than this game.

  4. 04

    Ship a demo before 16 October 2026.

    High impact

Pre-launch proof is the lowest sub-score on this page at 4 out of 10, because there is no demo and no reviews. A demo is the single asset that turns a browser into a wishlist before launch. This game has one unusual mechanic that has to be felt to be believed, which is exactly the case a demo wins. There are 40 days left, so this is the fix most likely to slip.

  5. 05

Fix the genre field: it currently says Massively Multiplayer.

    High impact

Steam lists this page under Action, Adventure, Indie, Massively Multiplayer and Simulation. The description says you pick 1 of 4 characters and play the story alone or with friends. An MMO genre on a 4-player co-op game puts the page in front of the wrong browsers and sets the wrong expectation for reviews. It is one field in Steamworks.

  6. 06

Give the in-game internet its own screenshot.

    Medium impact

Nothing in the first 5 screenshots legibly shows the phone screen. Shots 3 and 5 are both an animal beside water, a duck and a deer, so 2 of the 5 most valuable slots are landscape photography. Replace one with a clean frame of the phone mid-lookup, ads and unreliable advice visible. That single image is the whole pitch.

  7. 07

Drop Party Game and Hidden Object from the tag list.

    Medium impact

The tail of the 20 carries Party Game, Nature, Hidden Object and FPS alongside Survival Horror. Party Game promises a night with 4 friends laughing, and Survival Horror promises the opposite. Steam reads the whole set when it decides who sees this page. A buyer reads it as a page that has not decided.

Bottom line

The page is complete and undersold

Online: 404 does not need more assets. It needs the phone said out loud in the short description, the cabin moved to the front of the carousel, and one tag added. All three land in an afternoon.

A score of 92 is why we publish teardowns rather than scores alone. A checklist counts what is on a page. It cannot tell a dev that the best idea in their game is 400 characters below the fold.
